About me:
Hi, I'm Hank! but you probably know me better as Caligreen.
I am a Youtube content creator and self-taught indoor organic cannabis cultivator who has been sharing my grow journey with the world via YouTube since 2012. I am also one of the first original cannabis cultivation content creators on YouTube and the creator of the Grow Along, documentary-style, seed-to-harvest videos.
My dedication to educating others about cannabis cultivation has earned me a loyal following and has helped millions of people around the world to cultivate their own successfully. My videos provide a detailed and comprehensive look at the entire cultivation process, from selecting and germinating seeds to harvesting and curing the final product.
Despite the challenges faced by cannabis content creators in the early days of YouTube, I have managed to keep my channel alive and thriving, even as many of my peers were deleted in 2015-2016. I have had to make sacrifices, including losing much of my original content, to keep my channel going. However, my commitment to providing quality, true content without the corniness of "influencer" culture has allowed me to stay true to my mission and continue to make a positive impact on the home cultivation community.
My content has influenced influencers, hobbyists, and my dedication to educating others about organic cultivation has made me a respected figure in the home grow community. My goal is to continue creating educational content that empowers people to cultivate their own in a responsible and sustainable way, without the need for goofy "influencer" gimmicks. Caligreen is a pioneer in the cannabis cultivation community, and my contributions have helped to shape the hobby home cultivation industry as it exists today.

My Story:
I lacerated my sciatic nerve while training for a local triathlon in 2011. The injury left me bedridden for three months, with weakened legs and in excruciating pain. I found myself relying on a cocktail of painkillers and muscle relaxers to cope with the pain.
One day, I decided to take all my medication in an attempt to numb the pain and fall asleep as quick as possible. I laid in my bed numb, and just before I fell asleep, I noticed my breathing had slowed down. I remember at that moment thinking " this aint right, fuck this". I made a decision at that moment... I would no longer rely on opioids and other drugs to manage my pain. I decided to face the pain head-on, without the aid of medication.
Physical therapy was difficult. It was during this time that I rediscovered the benefits of medical cannabis. While it didn't take the pain away, it provided just enough relief to allow me to push myself further during stretch and recovery exercises.
By 2012, I had made the decision to stop buying cannabis from local dispensaries and began growing my own. I documented the process and shared it with others, without really knowing why. Looking back now, I'm glad I did, as my videos have helpedso many people with similar circumstances around the world.
When I first started growing, There wasn't much information online. I turned to online forums to try and learn but, found it difficult to find credible information and was often ridiculed for being a "noob" or beginner. I began my grow journey by following nutrient company feeding schedules suggestions, and forum threads with the same regurgitated information. I knew absolutely nothing about growing when I first attempted, but I was determined to figure it out.
It wasn't until I stumbled on to Jorge Cervantez's book "Marijuana Horticulture" that I gained the basic knowledge needed to pull through my first grow. But the journey didn't end there.
early on, I was curious about the different soil mixes and wanted to know which was best. I planted 3 seeds in three different soil mixes. I decided to water the plants without nutrients, expecting them to die, but they never did. This chance discovery led me on a obsessed search for answers. I eventually found about Aquaponics, which led me to Permaculture, which pointed me to something called No Till and living Organics and eventually to Jeff Lowenfells' book "Living with Microbes." This book made all the pieces fall into place, and I finally felt like I Understood why all the plants survived. With that, the path of my growing journey had been set on its course.
Despite all of this knowledge and experience, I don't believe that I know everything there is to know about growing. I feel that this journey is ongoing and that there is always something new to learn.

The Logos
2012-2014
I started the channel in February of 2012. I needed a picture for my profile. I decided to do a logo instead. At the time, Youtube mostly looked the other way to this sort of content but most content creators kept their content and identities on the low. I think it was because most of the States had not legalized medicinal , let alone recreational. Medical was legal in California at this time an I held a card to both purchase, grow and "Donate". During this time, Medicinal dispensaries would display a green cross to identify them as shops. The Idea of the first channel logo was to replicate the green cross but instead of it being green, it was a macro shot of a flower. The name i chose for my channel was California Green. |
2014-2016
By 2014 I had picked up a 50k following. I knew my old logo wasn't going to cut it anymore. The new logo had to be a little more personal.
When I was a kid, my parents use to take me to Venice beach often. The smell of incense, bacon warped hotdogs, the ocean and marijuana filled the boardwalk air. $5 sunglasses and T-shirts were the thing to get when visiting. One particular shirt that always stood out to me was the Venice beach shirt. Tourist would by these things up like hot cakes. I never got one but that image was forever logged in my minds memory banks, and often brought back up when I smelled herb burning and the ocean breeze.

The shirt showed a sun setting through the perspective of window blinds, a palm tree swinging in the breeze and the words Venice Beach written across the chest.
I grew up near Arlington Heights, an area of South Los Angeles. Whats predominant and hard to miss is the thousands of tall straight Palm trees that silhouette in the LA skyline. The palm trees represent LA to me. The silhouette Leaf was to make it clear what the channel was about and the name was shortened down to CALIGREEN.

2016- Present
By 2016 my following was at over 150K. The new logo draws back on the same childhood memories of Venice beach and the Palm trees from LA; but I had been living in the SFV (San Fernando Valley) for most of my teen and adult life and felt I needed to somehow represent it in my logo. I added The Mountains to represent the mountains that surround the valley and fill the skyline in every direction you look. The leaf and lettering were also updated.
